Career Workshop Jointly Organised With Asrama Sentosa-66

REHABILITATION INSTITUTIONS CAREER WORKSHOP

On 19th April 2001 Asrama Sentosa and Kuala Lumpur Juvenile Welfare Committee organized a Career Workshop with residents of Asrama Sentosa, Asrama Bahagia and Sekolah Tunas Bakti Sungai Besi. The program was officially opened by Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur Director of Social Welfare. In his opening speech, Mr. N.M. Pillai urged the Kuala Lumpur Juvenile Welfare Committee to be active and organize similar programs at other welfare institutions to expose the residents to society at large and providing them with career information and information about government agencies which would be helpful to them.


During the program, several invited speakers from Giat Mara and Entrepreneurial Ministry gave talks. During the evening, a session of story telling on what the future holds was conducted by PERKAMA (Malaysia Counseling Association).

The program was very interesting as it exposed the participants to career opportunities and directions upon their release from the institutions.

HANDICRAT SALE AND ART DEMONSTRATION, HANDICRAFT MAKING AND SINGING BY TAMAN SINAR HARAPAN KUALA KUBU BAHRU (TSH KKB)

In conjunction with the program TIM Charity Drive 2000 organized by Texas Instrument Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. residents of TSH KKB, Jerome Yap Hock Chai and Lum Kam Kwai showed their abilities to draw using their feet while Mohd Nor bin Abdullah made handicraft as Thiruselvan and Lim Chiew Peng showcased their singing talents.

 
The three-day program on 6 – 8 November 2000 also provided an opportunity to TSH KKB together with National Kidney Foundation (NKF) and Malaysia Cancer Foundation to showcased and sold handicrafts. The programme’s aim was to raise donations and used clothing from Texas Instruments to be distributed to participating charitable organizations. Donations amounting to RM4,687.24 and several boxes of used clothing were presented to TSH KKB by Mr. Tham Wai Keong, Managing Director of Texas Instruments Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. at a separate function held on 18 November 2000 at TSH KKB.

BASIC COURSE FOR PDK WORKERS

Basic Course for PDK Workers was conducted by Planning and Information System Division (PSM) with the cooperation of Counseling and Welfare Services Division (PKM), Department of Social Welfare, Malaysia. The arrangement and contents of the course was prepared with the cooperation of 3 JOCV Volunteers comprising a Special Education Teacher, a Physical Therapist and an Occupation Therapist who were also appointed as trainers for the course.

The course was conducted in 4 series according to zones i.e. Northern, Central, Eastern and Southern Zones. The first was held at Ayer Keroh Country Resort Melaka for 40 PDK workers from the Southern Zone. The subsequent course was held at the Disabled Persons Rehabilitation and Industrial Center at Bangi, Selangor.

The course was held to:

  • Introducing the approach of the PDK program
  • Provide basic understanding on disability, causes and methods of prevention of disability
  • Provide knowledge and skills in methods of identifying and planning of rehabilitation program for disabled children with learning difficulties
  • Provide knowledge on the approach of using local and easily available equipment and facilities
  • Provide knowledge on communication processes, documentation, recording and tracking the progress of children with learning disabilities within the contexts of family and community.



SEA Games XXI run at Labuan-69

SEA GAMES XXI RUN AT LABUAN


Federal Territory Labuan was given the honour to receive the SEA Games torch from Brunei Darulsalam. The torch arrived at Labuan on a ferry from Brunai Darulsalam on 10 March 2001 and a formal reception was held at Dataran Labuan

at 3.00 p.m.

26 disabled persons registered with the Social Welfare Department participated in the run on 10 and 11 March 2001.

VISIT BY Y.BHG. DATIN ZAHARAH BT. KECHIK, YANG DIPERTUA BADAN AMAL DAN KEBAJIKAN ISTERI-ISTERI SELANGOR (BALKIS) KE ASRAMA SENTOSA.

On 22nd February 2001, Asrama Sentosa received a visit from the wife of Menteri Besar of Selangor who is the Chairman of Balkis. 30 members of Balkis participated in the visit and were received by Federal Territory Kuala Lumpur Director of Social Welfare Department.

The visit was to foster a closer relationship between the wives of the leaders of society and welfare institutions while increasing the awareness of Balkis members about social problems and to get acquainted with the management of Asrama Sentosa.

During the visit, BALKIS contributed RM 1,000 in cash and two washing machines to Asrama Sentosa. At the end of the visit, she expressed her appreciation for the reception and wished the relationship to continue in the future.



PDK Tampin Committee Members and Trainees visited the Capital-72

PDK TAMPIN COMMITTEE MEMBERS AND TRAINEES VISITED THE CAPITAL.

PDK Tampin Committee Members and Trainees went on a learning tour of the Federal Capital Kuala Lumpur on 20th April 2001. The one day visit was intended to expose the children attending the Tampin PDK classes to places of interest in Kuala Lumpur, to show the trainees external conditions while raising the awareness of the society about the disabled towards the promotion of a caring society.

The trip also provides an opportunity for the children to put into practice their ability to socially interact with other members of society and utilize public amenities. However, the main focus of the visit was as a form of recreational activity to reduce the level of boredom with their normal environment while providing an opportunity for the children to see places that were regularly mentioned during lessons in PDK classes. The visit was also intended to develop the relationship between the children and parents and Committee Members. The group was led by Tampin PDK Chairman, Mr. Kassim bin Ahmad, together with 8 Committee Members and 20 parents and children. Accompanying them was Tampin Social Welfare Officer.

Places visited were Menara Kuala Lumpur, Mines Wonderland, Water Park and Ulu Yam Waterfall. The group was received by the management of Menara Kuala Lumpur and was given a briefing on the construction of the tower followed by a free tour. In the afternoon, Ulu Yam Waterfall was visited and in the evening, Mines Wonderland, where the resort’s management and mascot were on hand to receive the group. The group was provided with free tickets to enjoy the beauty of the park and the children was entertained by the mascot. The group visited the Winter Place, cruised the lake, took a train ride around a park filled with all kind of animals and wildlife and rode antique cars. The visit ended at 9.00 p.m.




“Masih Ada Yang Sayang” program at The Serendah National Skill Development Center (PPKKS)-73

"MASIH ADA YANG SAYANG" PROGRAM AT THE SERENDAH NATIONAL SKILL DEVELOPMENT CENTER

A one-day motivational program with 28 undergraduates from Sultan Idris Education University Faculty of Cognitive Science was held on 3rd February 2001 with participation by 40 PPKKS trainees with the cooperation of PPKKS Guidance and Counseling Units under the supervision of Mr. Yunus Jurait and Mr. Abdul Rauf bin Mohali, who is PPKKS Counselor. The activities were in the form of group exercises to develop a spirit of cooperation which will directly improve the level of intelligence and confidence of the trainees to be independent while understanding society’s consideration in their effort to help and love the trainees.

The program started at 8.00 a.m. until 5.30 p.m. and encompassed an introductory session, formation of work groups, designing of uniforms, obstacle course, and problem solving and ended in group singing for remembrance. Overall, the program gave a new experience in testing the mind of the trainees and their self development.




“My Home, My Paradise” Program-74

“MY HOME, MY PARADISE” PROGRAMME

On 1st April 2001, the Hostel organised a program called “My Home, My Paradise”. The program was one of the activities under the Hostel activities calendar. The Home put in a lot of efforts to make the program a success. The family members of the trainees also took part in the program. It was well received by the families. Among the objectives of the program was;

To create an environment conducive for the appreciation of Islam and harmonious family.

To promote affections between one another whether between individuals, families or societies.

To develop a closer relationship between trainees, families and staff.

To inform families on the role of police in resolving youth problems and the effects on society and nation.

The program was officiated by the Director, Penang Social Welfare Department, Tuan Haji Mahfudz bin Haji Omardi. The program includes religious talks by the State Islamic Department and briefing session by the Police Department. During the talks and briefing sessions, the families were attentive partaking in the dialogue session. Lunch was provided by the Home through the collective effort of the staff.




State of Perak Celebration of Disabled Person Day-75

STATE OF PERAK CELEBRATION OF DISABLED PERSON DAY

Celebration of Disabled Person Day 2000, State of Perak, was held at Taiping Municipal Hall on 26th April 20001. It was officiated by Exco for Rural and Community Development, YB Dato’ Ainon Khariyah bt Dato’ Mohd Abbas representing the Menteri Besar of Perak who was indisposed.

The participation of various parties including government agencies, NGOs and private sector putting-up show booths that provided source of information on the activities and program involving disabled person.

The height of the function was the presentation of 9 categories of disabled personalities:

Disabled entrepreneur

Best Disabled student

Disabled athletes (male and female) of the year

Best PDK

PDK staff of the year

Best Disabled family

Most Committed towards disabled – corporate sector

The Guest of Honour was given the honour to present various support equipment and prosthesis and launch grants including 10 motorcycles from National Welfare Foundation to disabled people recipients.
